How Does an In-Dash Car DVD Player Work?

Installation Process
An in dash car DVD player works by being inserted into the dash board where the vehicle's existing stereo system is located and then wired into the car's electrical and audio system.

This is done by removing the front section of a vehicle's dash board and disconnecting the stereo. Once the existing stereo is removed the DVD player can be installed by using an installation harness, which is vehicle specific and is designed to have the player fit into the space vacated by the stereo. The in-dash car DVD player in then connected to the vehicle's electrical system and to the speakers.

When installing an in-dash car DVD player be sure to disconnect the vehicle's battery to prevent shock.

Watching a Movie
An in-dash DVD player operates similarly to a traditional DVD player. A DVD is inserted into the player and the operator uses the machine's control buttons to play, stop and pause the disc. An in-dash car DVD player has a small screen, on which the disc's program can be viewed.

The exact operation varies from model-to-model, but the controls are usually located on the unit itself. Options, such as fast forward, skip and commercial skip, are sometimes limited when compared with traditional models.

Other Uses of an In-Dash DVD Player
It can also be used to listen to an iPod or MP3 player. To use this feature, connect an auxiliary audio cable from the device into the auxiliary port on the DVD player, and use the volume controls on the player to turn the sound up or down.

A satellite radio receiver can also be connected to an in-dash DVD player. To do this, connect the audio-out cables from the receiver to the audio-in port on the DVD player. The volume controls can then be used to control the sound from the satellite radio.
